Spring’s Best Flowers

Here in Maine, our springtime doesn’t really begin until April.

While other states can have full blooms by March, Mainers have to wait until the threat of frost is over… which can be as late as the end of May!

Now that we have hit mid-April and have enjoyed a handful of days above 50 degrees, we can finally start our flower seedlings for the season.

Here’s a few of our favorite springtime flowers to embrace the season’s changes:

  1. Tulips

Nothing seems to say spring quite like tulips do. These colorful flowers are one of the first flowers to greet the world each season. One of the reasons we love them so much is because they will continue to grow even after being trimmed!

white and yellow daffodils

2. Daffodils

Another flower that instantly reminds us of spring is daffodils. They are most commonly a cheery yellow color but they also come in shades of white, orange and pink!

stems of pussy willow

3. Pussy Willow

Pussy willows are a staple in many springtime arrangements and decor pieces. The fuzzy little nubs that form on the branches add texture and interest to any floral piece. Also, they are named pussy willow because they resemble a kitten’s paws and toe beans. How adorable is that?

bright pink coral colored peonies

4. Peonies

These beautiful, luscious blooms typically arrive in late spring or early summer. Their plump size and ruffled petals create an instant focal point for any garden or flower arrangement. They symbolize a happy life and are sometimes delightfully fragrant!

pink white and purple sweet peas

5. Sweet Peas

Sweet peas are a delicate, dainty flower with an intoxicating scent of honey and orange blossoms. Unlike the edible peas we use in cooking, all parts of the sweet pea are poisonous and should not be eaten.
